About 110 people were arrested in relation to the violence that exploded in the Murshidabad district dominated by the Muslims of Western Bengala by protesting the WAQF law (amendment), police said on Saturday (April 12, 2025).
Several vehicles, including police trucks, were set on fire, stones were thrown into the security forces and roads were blocked when violence shook Mourda, Murshidabad, Parganas South 24 and Hooghly districts on the new legislation on Friday).

The raids were underway in all these districts, with more than 110 arrested in Murshidabad, police said.
“Some 70 people were arrested from Suti, and 41 people from Samserganj in relation to violence,” said a police officer.
The situation in these places affected by violence remained tense on Saturday (April 12, 2025) in the morning, but no adverse incidents were reported, authorities said.

In the worst district of Murshidabad, prohibition orders have been imposed and Internet services have been suspended in places that saw violence, they said.
“It is patrolling in the areas of Suti and Samserganj. No one is allowed to regroup anywhere. We will not allow any attempt to interrupt the situation of the law and order,” said an officer, appealing to people who do not pay attention to “rumors in social networks.”
Meanwhile, a teenager who was allegedly injured in the police who shot the clashes in Suti was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata, police said.

The districts that saw violence have significant Muslim populations.
The BJP attacked the government of Mamata Banerjee, stating that if it was “incapable” to handle the situation, you should seek help from the center.

“Public property was destroyed, government officials felt threatened, and an atmosphere of fear and intimidation was created, all under the false dissent of dissent. The silence of the Mamata Banerjee government is trying,” he said.
Adhikari said that those behind violence must be identified, arrested and processed under the strictest law sections.
