The workers of the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party, led by the state president of the Party for Vijayendra, organized a protest against the state government, as part of their Yatre Janakrosha in Shivamogga on Saturday, amid strong rains.
The party had planned a protest march and a public meeting as part of the agitation against the increase in the price of essential products in Karnataka.
Addressing the workers, Mr. Vijayendra said that the Government of Congress in Karnataka had increased the price of 50 essential products. Increased diesel taxes, a measure that would affect the price of many other products.
The government had no concern for the poor of the State. Government employees did not obtain their regular wages, he claimed.
Hey also made an exception to the 4% reserve for Muslims in public contracts and claimed that the government used significant funds for the welfare of scheduled castes and tribes.
Lok Sabha members for Raghavenendra, Govind Karjol, former Ministers Araga Jnanendra, Hartal Halappa, MLA Sn Channabasappa and others met the protest meeting.
Meanwhile, the members of the Shivamogga district of the Youth Congress organized a protest against the BJP.
Instead of protesting against the state government, the members of Congress said that BJP leaders should convince central leadership in Delhi and reduce the price of essential products, including gasoline, diesel and LPG cylinders.
Police intervened and prevented them from getting to Gopi Circle, where BJP leaders protested. They took the leaders of Congress in custody.
