Seven people, including five women, or an interstatal gang, accused a series of high -end Sari points of sale in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other southern states, were arrested by Madhapur police on Saturday.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Kanumuri Venkateswara Rao, 40, Katta Yeshoda, 50, Kampa Ramana alias Ravanakka, 47, Retarakonda Subhashini, 39, Sadupati Thirupatamma, 38, Surugati Venkates Venkateswarlu, 38.

All defendants are residents of the Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh.

Police said six of the seven defendants have a history of criminal activity and that they have previously operated in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The sentence follows a complaint on April 3 by the owner of a boutique Sare Premium in Friends Colony, Miyapur.

According to the complaint, while the owner was out of personal work, her husband was managing the store. A couple entered the exhibition room under the pretext of buying a large amount of Saris. While attending them, they asked for water. When he entered to search, three more people entered the store and involved him in a conversation.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the couple, together with the newcomers, silently abandoned the facilities, stating that they would return once the lady is back.

Later, on his return, the owner suspected and verified the inventory, just to discover that 14 Caros Saris were missing.

The modus operandi of the gang meant attacking Sari exhibition rooms with minimum personnel, particularly those in isolated places. Entering as possible buyers, women would request Premium Saris, overvaluing the seller. Then hide the saris under their garments and leave the store on the pretext to return later, police said.
