GI tag sought for two more sarees from Tamil Nadu

The weavers of the famous cotton SARI Kanchipuram and the Silk Sari of Rasipuram requested the prestigious geographic indication label (GI), a certification that recognizes the unique crafts and the cultural legacy of a specific region.

The Tloom Handloom Export Promotion Council, under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has played a key role in facilitation of thesis requests, which have officially submitted in the registration of geographical indications.

The application for the Kanchipuram cotton SARI, known for its unique designs and its exceptional quality, was presented by the Cooperative Society of Tejores de Vadamanapakam Cuestores de Vadamanapakam Sakthivel Murugan. These Sari generally present reasons such as Rudaksham (Sacred nut) and VANKI (Bracelet) along the edges. The high thread density, approximately 60 holes for 1.2 inches of warp, along with a good urdimbre balance and plot threads, provides strength to the Sari and a refined finish, which distinguishes it as a unique art form in the Indian textile tradition.

Rasipuram silk saris are traditional hand -woven creations, known for its light texture, durability and vibrant appearance. Made with pure silk thread, they appear Gopuram (Temple style borders), floral or geometric motifs, and a minimum tsari work for a subtle glow. These saris come in a variety of colored pallets ranging from light tones such as Tussar and Green de Loro to darker tones such as Maroon, Navy Blue and Olive Green.

The rasipuram silk saris are woven in well or high -well looms. The metal cane used allows 100 inch ends with 75 selections per inch. Each Sari uses approximately 5,100 total extremes, and a single deformation can produce up to 10 Saris. The minimum weight of each Sari is around 450 grams.

Sari’s request from Seda Rasipuram was filed by TH80, the Waéver cooperative cotton manual of the vetirarani silk. P. & Sale Society Ltd and Kattanachampatti Silk Primary Handloom Weaver’s Co-Op. Production & Sale Society Ltd.

“The gastrointestinosa label of thesis saris will not only protect the traditional art forms of the thesis, but will also improve its global recognition, ensuring that its unique characteristics are preserved and celebrated for the coming generations. Cooperatives, the manual loom industry of Tamil Nadu is prepared to obtain additional recognition in the national and international market,” Mr. Gandhi said.
