Protesters hurl stones, police lathi charge in clash during anti-Waqf Act agitation in Assam’s Silchar

The protesters threw stones while the police used canes in a rally held against the WAQF (amendment) law on Sunday (April 13, 2025) when the agitators and the police faced themselves in the Cachar district of Assam, said a senior official.

The official told him PTI That several hundred people took to the streets in the Berenga area of ​​the city of Silchar without permission to protest the recently promulgated legislation.

“Around 300-400 people protested when blocking the way. When we tried to clear the way, some of them threw stones at us. We had to use a slight load to disperse the crowd,” he added.

The area has now been clear, said the official.

He said that a case has a registered leg, but no one has yet been arrested or arrested.

The protesters showed black flags and shouted slogans against the BJP government, demanding the repeal of the law.

Assam’s prime minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said on Saturday that the State Police had a “strong intelligence” report that could be protests of “some disturbances” by the minority against the WAQF law (amendment).

He said that the police force worked extensively for the prevention of any violence, with the suggestion problems of the intelligence report on Friday.
