The Institute of Medical Sciences of Nizam (Nims), Hyderabad, is intensifying its efforts to improve the quality of life of patients fighting Parkinson’s disease through advanced treatment options and comprehensive care. With a dedicated movement disorder clinic and the support of government health schemes, Nims is transforming the results for those affected by the neurological condition.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects movement and motor control. Although medical advances have improved the results of patients, the disease still raises daily challenges, including tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness and balance problems. Non -engines symptoms, such as anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, further complicate life for patients and caregivers.

“Parkinson’s disease can be handled effective with timely medication and surgical options such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), allowing patients to carry active lives,” says Sireesha Yareeda, additional professor and senior neurologist at NIMS. She underlines the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to improve long -term results.

The DBS, a key treatment offered in Nims, is generally recommended after 3 to 4 years of medication therapy when medications begin to lose effectiveness or cause worrying side effects. The procedure implies implanting electrodes in directed areas of the brain, which are connected to a battery placed on the chest wall. This stimulation helps control symptoms with minimal surgical risks, thanks to refined techniques in use in the institute, says Dr. Siresha.

Yerramneni Vamsi Krishna, professor and head of neurosurgery at Nims, adds that some can benefit from ablation procedures, where a small and specific area of the brain is injured using heat to improve the quality of life.

The NIMS movement disorder clinic attends not only Parkinson, but also related disorders such as dystonia and tremors. It is important to highlight that the inclusion of DBS under the health schemes of the Telangana government such as Aarogyasri and the employee’s health scheme has made this advanced surgery more accessible. Since August 2024, more than 93 patients have undergone DBS in Nims under these schemes.
