As part of the impulse against narcotics and prohibited substances, the Kancheepuram district police have notified Indiamart InterMeh Ltd. and its directors for allowing young people to buy drugs illegally programmed through their online portal.

Police touched the action after the sentence of at least 10 young people who had acquired drugs illegally through the portal and the seizure of more than 10,000 tablets in Srperumbud and Oragadam in the Kancheepuram district recently. A Superior Police officer said: “Recently, we will confiscate more than 10,000 analgesics tablets, such as Tapentadol and Nitrazepam, of a group of people operating in Srperumbudur and Oragadam. This group had acquired the programmed drugs of Delhi and other states through the portal without a recipe and sold them in the town.

Police said many young people throughout the country are using Indiamart throughout the country for scheduled drugs that are not allowed to sell without adequate documentary medical advice.

The officer added that the Indiamart network was used to connect young people who are addicted to drugs scheduled with illegal suppliers of these medications. Despite being aware of the danger to health, Indiamart had done nothing so far to address the problem, he said.

“Our preliminary research suggests that the portal abet young people in the illegal acquisition of programmed drugs. It is the responsibility of the portal to avoid any illegal acquisition. Therefore, in credible information, we have started the portal portal. [and its directors] When they fulfill them and order them to appear for an investigation, “said the officer.

Police added that the notice was delivered under section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on the portal and its directors, Dineh Chandra Agarwal (CEO and MD), BrijEsh Kumar, Dravayan Guppa and Aakash Chaudhry.

The analgesic or psychotropic tablets are crushed and inject for poisoning. Each tablet costs between ₹ 30 and ₹ 300, cheaper than the other drugs. Sellers get profits since the tablets are sold 10 times more than the cost price. The investigations have revealed that these pills are acquired online in Mumbai’s bulk and other parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka and take Tamil Nadu by Couer, police sources said.

These tablets are also exported to Sri Lanka. Around 5 Lakh of analgesic tablets, which were kept hidden in a car near Rameswaram for being smuggled to Sri Lanka, were seized by the Narcotics Control Office last year.
