T.N. govt issues advisory reiterating use of Tamil as official language in departments

The Government of Tamil Nadu has issued a notice to senior officials and departments, reiterating the existing provisions and orders that require the use of Tamil as an official language in all government offices.

The letter has gone to additional main secretaries, main secretaries, secretaries, departments of the Secretariat, district collectors and departments, urging the subject to follow the existing instructions to use tamil in all official communications and actions.

Tamil is the official language of the Government of Tamil Nadu, in accordance with the Official Language Law.

A matter of advice of V. Rajaraman, Secretary, Department of Development and Information Tamil on April 14, said previous orders that specified that government orders should only be issued in Tamil, and that circulars also also in Tamil.

Communications sent by the offices of the department leaders to the government and other offices must be in Tamil. With the exception of exempt cases, all other letters, communications and correspondence must also be in Tamil, said advice.

The letters received in the public’s tamil must be answered in Tamil; The notes on them must also be in Tamil, the notice said. Government employees must sign only in Tamil throughout the correspondence, he added.

In addition, for those correspondence and government orders, for which the exemption has granted to Bone to issue them in English, the departments of the Secretariat owe to the Division of Development and Information Translation Tamil Sater.

The respective departments, which have translated them into tamil, must send them to the translation division for review according to the requirements, he added.
