Chelalanam-Kochi Janakeeya Vedi, which launched a mass protest on October 28, 2019, demanding comprehensive measures to protect the 17 km coast section between Chellanam and Fort Kochi, will complete 2,000 days of its campaign on Good Friday. Residents have asked for a massive fast in the day to reiterate their demand for coastal protection, homes and lives.

The Vedi demanded on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) that the construction of the tetropod wall, which was intended to protect the coast from Puthenthodo to the northern end of the coastal village and beyond Fort Kochi, is completed in a war base. “The work must begin urgently as the rainy season approaches, and residents fear a serious coastal erosion and interruption in their daily lives,” they added.

Chellanam residents, with the rainy season in question, have also demanded that sand sacks be used for creative layers along the coast between Beach Road and Manassery. Vedi leaders have appealed to the residents of the coastal village to join Werhereve’s hunger strike in the world and send photos and reports of their participation in mass action.

VT Sebastian, general coordinator, said that Chellanam residents, under the auspices of the Janakeeya Vedi, also organized a protest meeting in front of the district school, emphasizing the need to build the promised advances on the high seas in Manassery, Saudi and Bowi, and Beach.

Mr. Sebastian said that a meeting of Vedi representatives with the district collector last week had ended with a positive note. He added that temporary measures to protect the coast would be completed before May 15.
