The deformity or detachment of the nails could have several reasons, such as exposure to different metals, Dr. Ir. Said Gite. “We still have to receive the report from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) that can reveal the real cause that can help us cure the root problem,” he added.

In February of this year, health experts said that the wheat from Punjab and Haryana, and distributed through ration stores in Buldhana, it was observed that it contained significant levels of selenium.

Health experts said on Thursday that it is known that exposure to the high selenium content can cause extreme hair loss and can lead further to nail detachment and deformity.

All affected people come from lower economic strata that are mainly dedicated to agricultural and contractual work.

In December 2024 and January 2025, more than 190 people from 15 villages in Shegaon were grabbed with a strange type of hair loss condition that has resulted in baldness between children, men and women from four years. ICMR experts had said that the scientific term for this condition is Anagen’s effluvium, a type of hair loss that occurs when hair in the growth phase is damaged. It is a form of non -cycatricial alopecia.

A team of experts from the Institute of Epidemiology-National ICMR, Chennai and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi collected a sample that was sent to the Laboratory of the National Institute for Environmental Health Research (Nireh) in Bhopal and Aiims Delhi to find the reason behind hair loss. Samples of more than 155 people from all age groups were collected.

ICMR and Aiims dermatology teams collected hair, blood, urine, water, scalp biopsy sample, environmental and biological samples. None of the patients had common symptoms or suffered health problems such as fever or diarrhea. They supposedly do not use products such as shampoos or conditioners. Those who experience hair loss and nail deformity, Eagly expect the report with the hope that he can have the key to resolving their inexplicable health concern.
