The Deepseek AI application became popular quickly in the United States after its launch in January, climbing at the top of Apple and Google Application stores in the United States and capturing the attention of Silicon Valley. Deepseek diffused from its competitors, such as Chatgpt, Gemini and Claude, being a fraction of the cost of developing and presenting a “reasoning” chatbot that showed the work for its answers.
But employees of at least one important company cannot use it.
The vice president and president of Microsoft, Brad Smith, said at an audience in the Senate on Thursday that Microsoft employees are prohibited from interacting with the Deepseek AI security chat about Conerns and concerns that “Chinany’s application.”

“In Microsoft, we do not allow our employees to use the Deepseek application,” said Smith, for Techcrunchexplaining that one of his main concerns was “data that returned to China.”
Smith said Microsoft has also blocked Depseek in its App Store, Microsoft Store. Depseek does not appear in the store when writing.

One of Smith’s concerns was the privacy of the data. The Deepseek privacy policy establishes that the company stores user data in China, where local laws require Chinese companies to share data with government officials at request. This leads to groups that the Chinese government could take advantage of user data for their own objectives.
Even so, it does not mean that Microsoft is not interested in Depseek technology.
Since Deepseek’s model is open source, anyone can download the model and store it on their own internal servers, without the user data returning to China. Microsoft offered the IA Deepseek model through its Azure cloud service in January, days after the Depseek application went viral.
Smith mentioned the duration of the Senate audience that Microsoft downloaded the model and changed the code.
“It was possible for us to enter, analyze it and change the code in the model … to eliminate harmful side effects,” said Smith.
