‘Bahut purana hai’: Kangana Ranaut drinks water from a silver glass during a podcast, swears by Ayurveda

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut recently revealed that she drinks water from a silver glass as part of her Ayurvedic routine. While promoting her film Emergency on a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, she explained that this practice helps balance her pitta dosha, one of the three primary energies in Ayurveda.

“Bahut purana hai (It’s a very old silver glass),” she said. When asked why she was drinking water from it, she replied, “Moon… sheetalta… jinko pitta zyada hota hai (The moon… coolness… for those who have excess pitta dosha),” she said, emphasising the cooling properties of silver water.

Drinking from silver vessels is an ancient tradition that has been practiced for centuries, especially in royal households. Ayurveda suggests that silver has cooling properties and can help purify water, while modern science acknowledges silver’s antibacterial effects. But does drinking water from silverware actually help balance pitta? And how much of this belief is backed by scientific evidence?

Can drinking water from silver vessels genuinely help in balancing pitta dosha, or is this more of a cultural belief than a scientifically proven benefit?

Dr Anjana Kalia, ayurvedic doctor and nutritionist at Anjana Kalia ‘s Diet Clinic, tells  “In Ayurveda, silver is believed to have cooling properties that can help in balancing pitta dosha. Pitta represents the fire and water elements in the body, and when it is imbalanced, it can lead to issues like acidity, inflammation, and excessive heat. Silver, being naturally cooling, is thought to help in calming this excess heat. However, while traditional Ayurvedic practices support this belief, there is limited modern scientific research to confirm its direct impact on pitta dosha.”
