The Western Bengal Government will introduce a motion against the WAQF Law (amendment), the Minister of Library Services and Information Siddiqullah Chowdhury said Thursday. Mr. Chowdhury, a key minority face of the government and a prominent leader of Jamiat Ulama-Hind, today called a protest against the act in Kolkatas Ram Lila Maidan.

“I received a call from the Office of the Principal Minister; he is satisfied with the demonstration. The CM said that the state government will introduce a motion in the assembly and will not allow the WAQF law to be implemented in the state,” the minister told the protests meeting.

Describing the meeting as a success, the minister said that if Muslims do not protest in their voices they will not reach the “necessary rooms.” Mr. Chowdhury, president of the state unit of Jamiat-e-anme Hind, also announced plans to send a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the Law. Before the approval of the law, several Muslim groups have organized processions in the city against Waqf’s law.

Mass protest

Thousands of Muslims took to the streets in Kolkata today, putting traffic at point. The Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind rally arrives a few days after the violent protests in the Murshidabad Jangipur area. More than 20 people have arrested for the legs for the incident in which police vehicles were burned.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee assured minorities that he would protect his interests, but added that acting hazing would endanger his government.

“I have a message for minorities: I know you are upset (about the WAQF amendment law). But I have faith; dividing and rules will not work in Bengala. Let this message go to everything: Live and let others live in peace. Banerje said on Wednesday. She urged the people of the minority community to avoid being” caused “by certain elements.
