The Sonu Nigam singer has become the object of controversy after a police complaint was filed against him by a pro-Kannada organization. The complaint claims that Nigam made insulting comments about the Kannada language. It was during a concert held in Bangalore from April 25 to 26 at East Point College of Engineering and Technology.

DharMaraj A, president of the Bengaluru district of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), filed the complaint. He affirmed that Nigam’s comments “Deeply brothers the feelings of the Kannadiga community” and could potentially climb linguistic tensions. According to the complaint, the incident occurred when a student asked Nigam to play a Kannada song.

In response, it is alleged that Nigam said that “Kannada, Kannada, Kannada … This is exactly the reason why the incident occurred in Pahalgam.” This comment, which has since circulated on social networks, has generated important criticisms for linking a request for a song in a regional language.

Dharmararaj said that Nigam comparison equated pride in the Kannada language with intolerance, portraying Kannadigas negatively and enhancing community harmony in Karnataka. He has urged the police to register a case against the singer under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It includes citing positions of enmity for pretempt, criminal defamation and indignation of linguistic feelings.

The reports indicate that when a group of attendees requested a song of Kannada Duration of the concert, Sonu Nigam seemed visible irritated and, according to the reports, he lashed out at the crowd. He alleges that he directed his controversial comments towards those who specifically request Kannada songs instead of Hindi songs. Videos on social networks have become viral.

The incident has lit the indignation between several personalities within the Kannada film industry and online pro-kannada activists. Many have publicly demanded a formal apology from Nigam. While some voices have requested a complete prohibition of the singer, a segment of his fan base has been in his defense. They have highlighted their cases to show respect for the Kannada language.
