The terrorist attack 26/ Mumbai accused Tahawwur Rana has been extradited from the United States as a team of several agencies brought him to India. This occurs after the United States Supreme Court recently denied Tahawwur Rana’s request in search of a stay in its extradition to India, a victory for New Delhi, which has been looking to take the Canadian-Pakistani citizen to the country for many years.
Tahawwur Rana extradition was approved in May 2023
The Central District of the United States District Court of California had approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana to India in May 2023. At that time, Tahawwur Rana appealed in the Court against the Order and in October of that year, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court gave him more time to present a motion on the matter.
Tahawwur Rana also presented a plea of habeas corpus against the Order of California in which the US prosecutor and the head of criminal appeals, Bram Alden, said: “Rana is extraditable for India under the simple evidence, and India Haasecuute and India Haasecusec Hole in terrorist attacks that resulted in 166 deaths and 239 wounds.”
Who is Tahawwur Rana?
Tahawwur Rana is a childhood friend of David Headley, an American citizen who was arrested in October 2009 by US authorities and sentenced to 35 years in prison for his participation in Mumbai’s attacks.
The United States government said: “Headley was convicted of conspiracy to bombard public places in India; conspiracy to kill and mutilate people in India; six positions of AIDS and promote the murder of US citizens in India; conspiracy to provide material.”
Tahawwur Rana studied in Pakistan and was a doctor in the Pakistan army, after which he moved to Canada and was possible granted by Canadian citizenship. Later he established a consulting firm called First World Immigration Services in Chicago, which imposed the perfect cover to David Headley to identify and analyze possible objectives for the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-E-Taiba (LET).
What is the case against Tahawwur Rana?
On November 26, 2008, 10 left terrorists broke into Mumbai and attacked important reference points such as the Taj hotel and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus train station, killing 166 people, including six Americans.
Tahawwur Rana was arrested by the United States Police after David Headley’s judgment in October 2009. He was sentenced in Chicago in 2011 for providing material support for the Let for the India attack.
