Talking to News18, Bilal said that the images collected from the La Chamber necklace will provide a vision of the world of leopards, active in the sugarcane belt in the Junnar region of Maharashtra.

“We have video images recorded by the camera necklace over a period of the last three months. Data analysis (which will be useful to understand the behavior of leopards),” he said.

Junnar, located about 90 km from Pune City, has often reached the headlines of an intense conflict of man-lopard. Junnar is predominantly a sugar call that offers a perfect hiding place for leopards. More, the availability of easy dams, cattle from farmers, attracts large cats near the village houses. Last year, seven human lives were lost in just eight months between March and October.

Meanwhile, a Wii team, which has been working in the area since 2019, has analyzed the behavior of large cats. In addition, the forest department took measures such as putting solar fences near the houses to mitigate the problem.

Bilal, an expert in large cats, said the video necklace was made as part of a MOU signed between the Forest Department of Maharashtra and Wii. “In total, 14 leopard were identified. 13 were on the radio neck, while one was zero,” he said on the phone.

A radio necklace is a device equipped with antenna and is linked to the animal’s neck. The data transmitted from the necklace helps researchers understand the nature and habitat of the animal. On the other hand, the video or camera necklace have a camera connected to the necklace. In recent years, such cameras necklaces have become popular among national pet lovers. However, it is the first time that a camera necklace is used in the leg in a wildlife relationship operation.
