Assam’s Prime Minister Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday (April 15, 2025) said that his government would not allow any protest or demonstration against the WAQF Law (amendment) anywhere public.
He advised organizations such as the Union of Minority Students of Assam (AAMSU) to challenge the law amended in the Supreme Court and do not spill their anger on the streets.
“The matter is in the Supreme Court. If someone has something against or for the WAQF law, he or she can approach the Apex Court,” Sarma told journalists.
“If some people take the roads that oppose the act, others that support it will do the same, which leads to fights. We do not want to be conflicts in Assam. We must all maintain our fraternal relationship and bring the state forward,” he said.
The prime minister said that it made no sense in the discussion of the WAQF law with the AAMSU or any other Muslim organization. “Since the matter is already in the Supreme Court, let the judges debate,” he added.
The police arrested dozens of protesters in some parts of the center and west of Assam a week ago. The protesters were heading to Guwahati to participate in a demonstration organized by AAMSU against the WAQF law modified in Guwahati.
On Sunday, a demonstration against the act in the city of Silchar in southern Assam became violent with the protesters who throw stones at security personnel.
