The steel cut for the acoustic research ship (ARS) built for the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) was launched in Garden Reach Builders and Engineers (Grse) Limited, Kolkata, Wednesday.
The contract for the Ars, valued at ₹ 490.98 million rupees, was signed between Gerse and DRD/Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) on October 21, 2024. The ship is expected to be delivered in three years in 2027.
Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Research and Development of Defense, and President of Drdo, was the main guest. The president and managing director of Grse, PR Hari, Chandrika Kaushik DG (PC & SI), Drdo, D. Seshagiri, director, Npol, main scientists of the DRDO and senior Gerse officials were present.
Once completed, Ars will be the first silent class ship in India. It will be about 90 meters long with a displacement of more than 5,000 tons. It is designed to achieve a speed of 12 clubs. This state -of -the -art container will be equipped with modern facilities that include gondola, lunar pool and dropkeel to carry out acoustic and orenographic research activities of the NPOL. The container is equipped with a dynamic positioning system (DP-II).
