In a movement aimed at bringing greater responsibility for bulk waste management, the Bhat Bengaluru mahanagara (BBMP) has introduced a declaration option within its property tax payment system. This was introduced about a week ago by the BBMP Revenue Department.

This new measure will require that certain owners be self -dating as bulk waste generators, which allows the civic body to rationalize the waste processing responsibilities throughout the city and exempt such owners of the user’s rate.

A BBMP senior official confirmed that the tax payment portal presents a drop -down option where owners can declare if they fall into the category of bulk waste generators. The classifications include residential complexes with 100 or more housing units, properties that measure more than 5,000 square feet and properties that generate 100 kilograms or more of daily waste. The owners must select the application category to complete their statement. Those who comply with this statement will be exempt from the user’s rate that entered into force on April 1.

According to the BBMP, the objective of this initiative is to push bulk generators towards the processing of in situ waste and make them more aware of the complexities involved in the management of large waste volumes. For the civic body, the management of bulk waste has become a growing challenge, which adds to the burden of administering regular domestic waste. The declared bulk waste generators will be requested to process waste within their facilities or deliver it to private waste processors.

However, the civic body is not leaving room for misuse. To protect against false statements, Bangalore Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) will perform physical inspections. These verifications will be carried out based on the data provided by the BBMP Revenue Department, which will track and list the property properties that fall enhanced in the bulk waste category. The inspectors will verify the waste processing methods and if the waste is delivered to packaging processors or regular waste collectors under contract with BBMP, violating the standards. Any discrepancy found at the inspection door will attract sanctions.

Those who do not process the waste themselves or associate with packaged agencies must deliver it on BBMP to a processing rate of ₹ 12 per kilogram, a cost that the civic body expects to dissuade the breach and encourages the decentralized management of the waste.
