Accusing the government of “looting” people by increasing special taxes on gasoline and diesel, Congress on Sunday (April 13, 2025) requested the setting of accountability and demanded that the audit of the partner and general auditor (CAG).

The opposition party also demanded that the Central Surveillance Commission (CVC) and the Central Research Office (CBI) investigate whether there was negligence or collusion deliberate in this matter.

Communications in charge of the Secretary General of Congress, Jairam Ramesh, in a publication on X, declared: “The people of India are being looted with one hand, the Modi government is increasing the tax burden and choosing people’s pockets, while Oiler processes, private exploitation and Gonernos!”

“The truth is: in May 2014, the Special Gasoline Tax was ₹ 9.20 and in diesel ₹ 3.46. Under the government of Modi, this has increased to ₹ 19.90 in gasoline and ₹ 15.80 in diesel, an increase of 357% and 54%, respectively!” He said in his position in Hindi.

The leader of the Congress said that the Government won ₹ 39.54 Lakh Crore of the oil sector in the last eleven, but could not relieve people.

“In May 2014, crude oil was $ 108/barrel, today it is only $ 65.31, that is, 40% cheaper, but gasoline and diesel prices are higher than UPA era,” Ramesh said.

“In 2014, gasoline in Delhi was ₹ 71.41 and diesel ₹ 55.49 per liter. Today the same gasoline is ₹ 94.77 and diesel ₹ 87.67 per liter: the public is being openly looted. Who is beneficial?” Hello Ash.

The Congress leader said that together with government companies, private oil companies also obtain enormous profits from refining and marketing, while the common man has a load of expensive gasoline and diesel.

“The problem is serious! CAG should audit how government policies benefited private thesis companies. CVC and CBI should investigate whether there was deliberate nigligence or collusion in this?” Mr. Rameh also said.

“Public money must be taken into account: responsibility must be solved.”

The Secretary General of Congress shared a media report, that the oil companies were big but now the prices for people went down.

The Congress had tasks to the government for the walk in special taxes on gasoline and diesel, with Rahul Gandhi stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally gave an adequate response to the “tariffs.”

Mr. Gandhi had also said that people suffering from inflation received another gift from “government booty.”

The government walked special taxes on gasoline and diesel in ₹ 2 per liter each. The Special Gasoline Tax rose to ₹ 13 per liter and that in diesel to ₹ 10 per liter.
