The drug control department in Touchi warned of severe actions against pharmacies that sell abortive pills without a valid recipe of a registered doctor.

The department has issued the warning due to the reports of a private pharmacy in KK Nagar selling abortive pills without a medical recipe. The pharmacy was sealed by the health officials of the Corporation.

“Surprise inspections would be carried out regularly and wholesale distribution and sale will be monitored. With this, our goal is to stop the insecure practice of consuming abortion pills without medical supervision,” said a senior official of the drug control department.

The authorities said that abortion pills were classified as mediations in Annex H, which require a recipe for a registered doctor. If the pharmacy is involved in the illegal sale of abortion pills, the department will seal the installation and cancel its license under provisions of the Drug and Cosmetics Law of 1940.

A meeting with pharmacy owners and pharmaceutical representatives must be collected to warn them that they do not sell abortive pills to people without a recipe. Paramedics and nurses will be sensitized to be alert while handling such cases.

According to M. Vijay Chandran, city health officer, high -risk abortion cases had reported in the city, especially in the areas of Edamalaipattipudur and Kuzhumani. “The illegal consumption of abortion pills without the supervision of a doctor was insecure, since they can lead to other complications depending on the health conditions of the individual and can cause maternal mortalities. The officials added that they would continue to carry out such operations to identify pharmacies that sell drugs at the counter to stop the illegal sale of drugs.
