It is likely that the favorable climatic conditions on Rabi’s harvest (winter) in the key states that produce the country of Punjab and Haryana of the country will probably increase wheat performance in this harvest season, experts said. However, premature rain accompanied by hail storms in some parts of Punjab and Haryana in the last two days triggered concern among farmers that the quality of permanent wheat cultivation could be damaged, causing losses.

The wheat harvest, with Rabi’s main harvest, between the end of October and December, has already begun in Punjab and Haryana. According to government data, wheat production in Punjab in 2023-24 was more than 181 Lakh tons, while Haryana saw almost 124 Lakh tons of wheat production in the same period. Agricultural experts hope that the harvest in both states exceed the previous year.

PS Rangi, agricultural expert and former advisor to the Commission of Farmers of the State of Punjab, explained that wheat is a temperature sensitive crop that thrives in cold conditions. “This time, the cold conditions have prevailed the entire crop season, which is a good sign for the production of bumper wheat. The intermittent and timely rains have resulted in a good grain development, which will increase wheat yields per hectares,” Rangi said.

Punjab and Haryana are the main wheat taxpayers to the central acquisition group. Many parts of Punjab and Haryana have experienced rain of light to moderate accompanied by winds in the last 48 hours, said the Department of Meteorology of India. “There was a fairly wide rain, accompanied by hail and duration of the winds in the last 48 hours in parts of Punjab and Haryana. However, clear climatic conditions are expected now in the next few days,” said Surinder Paul, director of Candigarh.

Expressing a group about the recent rain spell, Jagmohan Singh, general secretary of Punjab, Bharatiya Kisan Union, said the permanent wheat harvest had suffered damage in certain pockets of the Mansa district, where the harvest had been fattened.
