With the first batch of agniveters prepared to complete its four -year service term under the AGNIPATH scheme in 2026, the center is trying to absorb them in different government configurations. The Interior Ministry (MHA) has urged the states and territories of the Union to allocate the fees for training personnel in state police forces and other departments.
While the Interior Minister of the Union, Amit Shah, has written a letter to the main ministers, the interior secretary of the union, Govind Mohan, has written to the main secretaries. According to the main secretary of a state, MHA has requested to emphasize the need to provide employment opportunities for approximately 75 percent of the agniveers who will leave the Armed Forces after their mandate. The letter stressed that the AGNIVEERS, having suffered rigorous military training, will adapt well by the roles in the application of the law and other uniformed services at the state level.
The main state officer said that 25 percent of agniveers will be absorbed by the armed forces, while the CAPFs will give a 10 percent share for this personnel according to their vacancies. If states also manage to give a 15-20 percent share, about 50 percent of AGNIVERS will obtain work in police forces.
“As you know … 75 percent of the strength of the First Lot of Agniveers will complete four years under the Agnipath scheme and will come out in 2026,” said a senior state government official, citing the letter. “Therefore, we would like to request … to provide employment opportunities and other benefits to former aggregates … by reserving vacancies for recruitment in the State Police.”
The movement indicates an impulse of the center to institutionalize a subsequent route for the AGNIVEERS, a key demand from the launch of the AGNIPATH scheme in 2022. The scheme, which offers a short -term military service to young people between 17.5 and 21 years, promises the development of skills and the subsequent support of the service, but the transition to civil life remains a concern for many.
While several states have already announced employment reserves or preferential treatment for AGNIVEERS in recruitment processes, the last communication of the MHA aims to standardize such efforts in the country before the 2026 timeline.
The Ministry awaits a “positive response and timely action” to guarantee a reintegration without problems of trained young people.
