Strategically located in the Union of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Indonesia controls the key strangulation points such as the Malacca Strait. Its proximity to the South China Sea, where tensions with China on territorial claims persist, allows Indonesia to share intelligence that could link security problems in both regions. Similarly, Germany can contribute with advanced naval technology and experience, perfected through operations such as the EU Navor Off Somalia, to address maritime incidents.
There are indications that other nations of naval construction and shipping are also deliberating to be part of the agency.
Established in December 2018, the IFC-Iior aims to improve maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. The center collaborates with more than 50 countries and several multinational maritime security frames, which house Ilo to reinforce ties and coordination.
