Mahendra Hembram, one of the convicts in the case of triple high profile murder of 1999 of the Australian missionary Graham Staines and her two minor children, was released from Keonjhar’s jail in Odisha on Wednesday after turning 25 years.

Fembram and Dara Singh, also known as Rabindra Pal Singh, were convicted of the brutal murders of Staines and their children, Philip (10) and Timothy (6), which were burned alive by a mafia allegedly directed by Singh on the night of January 2199.
The victims were sleeping in a truck staked in front of a church in the Handharpur village in the Keonjhar district, when the attack took place, causing national and international outrage.

Throughout the years, Fembram was imprisoned in several facilities, including Jharpada, Jamuhari Open Airesping (Bhubaneswar) and jail in Cuttack, Berhampur, Baripada, Sub-Jail Anandpur, before Beonjhar, 2011.

On September 22, 2003, the Court gave Dara Singh the death penalty and sentenced another 12 to life imprisonment. However, in 2005, the Superior Court of Orissa commuted the death sentence of Singh to life imprisonment, a decision later confirmed by the Supreme Court.
Dara Singh, currently fulfilling a life imprisonment, presented a request for mercy in the Supreme Court in August 2024 in search of liberation. Another supplication of mercy was also presented to the president of India.
Meanwhile, on March 19, 2025, the Supreme Court ordered the Odisha government to make a decision on the remission of a “Ravindra” of Ravindra, also known as Dara Singh, which continues to comply with the sentence for the murders of Staines and his.
