The National Research Agency (NIA) in Thorsday confirmed the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the terrorist attacks of Mumbai 2008. His extradition arrived after years of sustained diplomatic and legal efforts of India.
Rana, who was in judicial custody of the United States, was extradited after exhausting all legal options to resist moving. The extradition occurs almost a year after the District Court of the Central District of California ordered its transfer to the Indian authorities on May 16, 2023. Rana had challenged the order in the ninth Court of Appeals of the United States and then appeals. All his requests were denied, the NIA said in a press release.
The NIA said that extradition was facilitated with the active assistance of the Department of Justice of the United States and the Marshal of the American sky, with the Indian Intelligence Agencies, the NSG, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry process in the Corordination process.
Rana is accused of conspiring with David Coleman Headley, also known as Daood Gilani and agents of the terrorist groups based in Pakistan Lashkar-E-Taiba (Let) and Harkat-Ul-Jihadi Islami (Huji) to execute the attacks that killed 166 people and injured over 230 in Mumbai in November 2008 of press.
Let and Huji are terrorist organizations designated under the Law of illegal Activities (Prevention) of India, 1967.
Rana extradition marks an important milestone in India’s efforts to bring all the perspectives of the 26/11 attacks before justice.
