IISR develops light-coloured turmeric – The Hindu

The new variety of turmeric developed by the Indian Institute for Special Research, Kozhikode.

The Indian Institute for Research of Espices (IISR), Kozhikode, has developed a new variety of light color of light color specifically for the Masala industry. The new variety, IISR Surya, presents a light -colored rhizome that meets the specific needs of the modern electrical industry.

Developed after the research focused, IISR Surya is expected to benefit farmers specialized in the production of high quality turmeric dust. In addition, it will address the shortage of the product in the open and export market that depended for the time of some other local varieties, the researchers said.

The new variety with a pleasant aroma is a high performance that sacrifices the increase in yield from 20% to 30% compared to that of existing local light varieties. According to the researchers who worked behind the new product, it can produce up to 41 tons per hectare. The curcumin content varies from 2% to 3%, which was along with other light color varieties, they said.

IISR scientists said that the new variety came out after a decade of research with the support of scientists D. Prasath, S. Arathi, Nk Leela, S. Mikesh Sankar and B. Sasikumar. They said that IISR Surya was developed through the clonal selection of the accessions held at the Institute’s Turmeric Germoplasm Conservatory. He was recruited for cultivation in Kerala, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh for the coordinated research project of all India on spices, they added.
