“India is likely to see rainfall above normal in the four -month monzón season (June to September) with accumulated rainfall estimated at 105% of the average of 87 cm long period,” said the Indian meteorology department to the Muumejay Delhi cart.

It is unlikely that the conditions of El Niño, associated with the rain of the monsoon below normal in the Indian subcontinent, develop this time, he said.

Parts of the country are already fighting the extreme heat and a large number of days of heat waves are expected in the period from April to June. This could strain the energy grids and result in water shortage.

The monsoon is crucial for the agricultural sector of India, which supports the sustenance of approximately 42.3% of the population and the 18.2% contributions to the GDP of the country.

A prediction of the normal rain that turns the monsoon season, therefore, is a great relief for the nation.

However, normal cumulative rain does not guarantee the temporal and spatial uniform distribution of rain throughout the country, with climate change further increasing the variability of the rain loading system.

Climate scientists say that the number of rainy days is decreasing, while intense rain events (more rain during a short period) are increasing, leading to frequent droughts and floods.
