Kuki-Zo civil society organizations have “warned” the MEITEI community against the climbing of the Hangjing hill in the Manipur Churacandpur district, stating that any attempt “will oppose the tooth and the nail.” The ThanGjing hill is considered a sacred site for Meitis that visits it in April.

In a statement, six Kuki Sun groups said that any attempt to climb the hills would be seen as a “direct challenge.”

“It is speculated that the Meitei community intends to cross the crowd cushion zone Kaba in the April corn.

“Who tries to cross the damping zone will be consulted in a direct challenge to the Kuki-zo community, and any unpleasant incident that occurs during such attempts will be the responsibility of those who hold them,” he added.

The groups, among which were Kuki Inpi Churacandpur and the Student Organization of Kuki, Churacandpur, asked for the status quo and avoiding greater escalation. “Any intention to cross the damping zone will oppose the teeth and nails for the Kuki-zo community,” the statement said.

The damping zone, which is heavy by the security forces, separates the Imphal valley controlled by MEITEI and the hill districts dominated by Kuki. More than 250 people have died and thousands of homeless people in ethnic violence between the two parties since May 2023.
