A boxes from Latin American countries are collaborating to launch Latam-GPT in September, the first major artificial intelligence language model to understand the diverse linguistic cultures and nuances of the region, Chilean officials said in Tesday.
This open source project, led by the National Artificial Intelligence Center (CENIA), together with about 30 regional institutions, seeks to significantly increase the absorption and accessibility of AI in Latin America.
Chilean Minister of Sciences, Aisen Etheverry, said the project “could be a democratizing element for AI”, imagining its application in schools and hospitals with a model that reflects the local culture and language.
Developed in January 2023, LATAM-GPT seeks to overcome the incacurities and performance limitations of global global models predominantly in English.
The authorities said it was intended to be the main technology to develop applications such as chatbots, not a direct competitor for consumer products such as Chatgpt.
A key objective is to preserve indigenous languages, with an initial translator already developed for Rapa Nui, the native language of Easter Island.
The project plans to extend this to other indigenous languages for applications such as virtual public service assistants and personalized educational systems.
The model is based on technology calls 3 AI and is trained using a regional computer network, including facilities at the University of Tarapaca of Chile and cloud -based systems.
Regional Development Bank Caf and Amazon Web Services have admitted it.
Although it currently lacks a dedicated budget, the head of Cenia, Álvaro Soto, hopes that demonstrating the capabilities of the system attracts more funds.
