‘More PU colleges can replicate SPP module to bring down suicide rate among students’

Kishor M. Rao, professor of the Department of Psychiatry at JSS Medical College, Mysuru, said the SPP can be replicated in any educational institution.

The Minds United for Health Sciences, Mysuru, has financed the study to develop the program.

The researchers involved in the development of the SPP, in an article published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, said that “a support environment in the educational institution plays a role in the prevention of suicide among students. Teachers are the source more support to understand suicide symptoms and can identify these symptoms among students in an early stage.

However, due to limited knowledge in the identification of suicidal symptoms, a program was tasks to train teachers about suicide prevention so that they can identify suicidal behavior among students in the initial phases.

The SPP, developed by the researchers after an elaborate study and validated it with the opinion of experts, was shared with approximately 72 university teachers of PU of the duration of UDUPI During a workshop carried out in June 2024. The SPP was implemented in colleagues, said Dr. Kishor.

Due to the large number of suicides in different parts of the state after the announcement of the results of II PUC, Dr. Ir. Kishor felt that the SPP could also be replicated in other educational institutions.

The SPP module was prepared by Mahe’s researchers: Kallabi Borah, Tesy Treesa José, Anil Kumar Mysore and PV Bhakary.
