The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has proclaimed on April 14, 2025 as the day of Dr. Br Ambedkar in New York City, with his 8.5 million residents celebrating the day, said a senior official in the mayor’s office in New York.
The deputy commissioner of the International Affairs Office of the Mayors of New York City, Dilip Chauhan, made the announcement here in the presence of the State for Social Justice and the empowerment Ramdas Athawale, who delivered the opening note of Turnyte Turnyte Turnyte Eventkate Organgedkare 135th Birth Anniversary.

Born on April 14, 1891, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, popular among his followers as Babasaheb, was the president of the most crucial writing committee of the Constituent Assembly that earned him the nickname architect of the Indian Constitution. It was also the Minister of Law and Justice in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after independence.
Ambedkar, who played a key role in the social movements that fought for the rights of dalits and untouchables, had received his doctorate in economics from Columbia University in 1927 and a title of honor in 1952.
Mr. Chauhan said that Ambedkar’s ideals go beyond the borders and time, finding strong connections in the corridors of the United Nations and New York, a city built by immigrants, energized by their diversity and attached by their belief shared in the opportunity and inclusion.

The president of Foundation for Human Horizon, Deelip Mhaske, said it is a deep recognition of one of the most transformative champions in the world of equality and civil rights that on April 14 has been proclaimed as’ Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day ‘.
The proclamation recognizes Ambedkar’s imposing legacy in the advancement of democracy, dignity, the empowerment of women and justice for historical marginalized communities, Mhaske said.
Mr. Mhaske expressed his gratitude to Mr. Adams pointing out that “this proclamation is more than symbolic: it is a moral statement that positions New York as a global capital for human rights and justice.” Previously in the event organized by the permanent mission of India to the UN, Athawale said that the principles that Br ambuskar fought for equity, representation and human rights) are more relevant than ever in the collective objectives of the international community.
“The life of Dr. Ambedkar is not simply a chapter in the history of India: it is a lighthouse for all humanity. Born in adversity, the transcended every barrier imposed by caste, poverty and colonial October, a global advantage for equality, dignity and democracy.
“His defense resonates far beyond the borders of India, which makes it an icon for the Modern Human Rights Movement,” said Athawale.
Before the UN event, Mr. Athawale also paid his tribute in the Ambedkar statue in the Lehman library of Columbia University, which he said in an X publication, was “erected as a symbol or knowledge.”
