The most wanted fugitive in India, Mehul Choksi, has been arrested in Belgium on Saturday, a significant development in the case of high profile Punjab National Bank (PNB). The Indian authorities are working towards their extradition, he thought that Choksi, accused of a fraud of RS 13.5 billion rupees, can seek bond, which enhancablely complicates the process.
Choksi, who lives with his wife in Belgium, presents unique challenges for extradition due to his Belgian citizenship. The timeline for his return to India is still uncertain.
Meanwhile, News18 has examined Chaksi’s Indian residence, providing information about his luxurious lifestyle.
Chaksi’s house is located in Gokul’s apartment in Malabar Hill, one of Mumbai’s most prestigious neighborhoods. The News18 visit revealed plastered walls with legal notices of the Control Directorate (ED), Income Tax Department, Banks and Courts. The house covers 7,000 square feet on floors 9, 10 and 11, valued at approximately 70 million rupees.
Despite its greatness, the residence is mired in financial and legal problems. A member of the Construction Society told News18 that Choksi has pending law projects that amount to 3 million rupees, which led society to consider notifying the emergency department.
This property, symbolic of Choksi’s opulent lifestyle, is now a testimony of his legal problems. The ED has already confiscated several of its assets, throwing doubts about the future of this Mumbai residence.
Mehul Choksi, who fled from India in 2018, faces charges in the PNB fraud, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, who is currently in the United Kingdom. Indian authorities are also looking for the extradition of Modi.
