In a strange initiative in Karnataka, the municipal council of the city of Putur in the Dakshina Kannada district has been converting wet waste into compressed natural gas (Biocng) with the help of a private company. The Biocng is being used to operate six vehicles of the municipality.

The Biocng is generated by Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP in a plant in Bannur.

Now, the municipality and Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP plan to sell biocng surplus to potential consumers.

Municipality Commissioner Madhu S. Manhaha said The Hindu That the plant was created by Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP under the model of construction, operation, operation and transfer (start) in civic lands. The plant was fined and is being operated by the LLP. The company will have to deliver the plant to muticibality after 40 years.

“The plant produced more than 24,000 kg or Biocng since August 2024,” said the commissioner and added that it produced between 200 kg and 250 kg or daily gas. “Our goal is to produce 350 kg or gas every day,” he said.

Mr. Manohar said that approximately 12 tons of waste of the law are generated in the jurisdiction of the municipality daily. The municipality diverted 10 tons of wet waste to produce Biocng. The remaining two tons of waste are not suitable for use in the plant because it contains some mixed waste. Wet waste should be segregated if it is going to be used to generate gas. Therefore, the two tons are being used for composting.

Krishna Narayana Muliya, managing director, Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP, said the company joined the municipality as a social service without commercial interest since the company is not remunerative. “Preparations are to sell the unused Biocng to people,” Muliya said.

The commissioner said that, with an increasing population and a generation of augmented waste, Putur City faces a growing challenge in municipal solid waste management, particularly biodegradable wet waste. Collecting the environmental and economic potential of organic waste, the municipality adopted innovative solutions to make it Biocng, a renewable and ecological source of energy.

By leveraging avant -garde technology, the municipality processes organic waste, such as food scrap, vegetable shells and garden cuts, high quality Biocng. This not only helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, but also mitigates the harmful impact of inappropriate waste, such as greenhouse gas emissions and soil pollution.

“The initiative is the first of his son among urban local bodies in Karnataka,” said Manohar.

“We have bones that receive consultations from some other urban local organizations in the state that accelerate the details with the intention of replicating the process in their cities,” said the commissioner.
