Three individuals, including a father and a son, lost their lives in the Murshidabad district of Western Bengala due to the clashes supposedly related to the ongoing protests against the WAQF Law (amendment). Recent reports indicate that violent thesis manifestations have extended Murshidabad to other regions, causing broad concern throughout the state.
Numerous families, mostly Hindus, have left the area dominated by Muslims, seeking security with the help of the border security force (BSF).
A high school in Parlalpur has turned an aid camp, which now houses hundreds of families. According to local reports, around 400 to 500 people have sought refuge in school, after having traveled 60 kilometers on foot or after crossing the gangs.
Displaced families face an uncertain future, insecure if they will ever return home. Saptami Mandal, 24, who has sought refuge at school, expressed his anguish, saying he feels like “a refugee in my own country.” She reported how a mafia set fire to her neighbor’s house and threw stones in her own home. She and her parents hid inside until the mafia left, and then were helped by the BSF to achieve security.
Saptami’s husband works as a mechanic in Kolkata. His mother, Maheshwari Mandal, described the heartbreaking trip they endured to get to the help camp. The family had to cross the river in the dark and a kind villager gave it refuge and clothing before reaching school.
The families who have sought refuge in Parlalpur High School are from areas such as Suti, Dhuliyan and Samhagerj in Murshidabad. According to the latest updates, three people have lost their lives in the violent clashes, including Hargobind Das, 72, and his son Chandan Das, 40, who were dragged from his house and killed by a mafia.
