The Advisor of the Télangana Government and former Minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir welcomed the provisional relief granted by the Supreme Court in the case that challenges the law of the WAQF amendment, 2025 and expected the Apex court to decrease the road.
Going to a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Shabbir Ali, one of the petitioners in the case, said that the instructions of the Supreme Court had arrested the attempts of the center to interfere with religious institutions. “The Modi government is trying to impose unconstitutional changes in WAQF institutions,” he accused.
Mr. Shabbir Ali said that the main defender Kapil Sibal had argued the case in the name of the petitioners, emphasizing that the law violated the constitutional guarantees given to religious minorities. “Waqf lands are not government lands. These are donations given by individuals for the benefit of poor Muslims, and must remain protected,” he said.
“Appointing the members of other religions to the WAQF meetings could create unnecessary conflicts and is against the spirit of religious autonomy,” he said. Mr. Shabbir Ali warned that Lakhs of WAQF land acres in Telangana and throughout India, who benefit not only Muslims but also people of other religions, would be in danger if this law is implemented. “The fight is not just for legal rights.”
Mr. Shabbir Ali Ali also cited the example of Telangana, where the Government led by Congress had tried the 4% reserve for Muslims and was better than their counterparts in other states. This is due to affirmative policies. “But now, the BJP government in the center is trying to weaken Muslim institutions by strongly modifying the WAQF law,” Hey said.
