Four boats turned into a sudden storm in a river in southwest China, leaving nine dead and one missing, state media said Monday (May 5, 2025).

More than 80 people fell to the WU River when the strong winds arrived in the scenic area in the province of Guizhou on Sunday (May 4, 2025) in the afternoon, said state station CCTV.

The initial reports said that two tourist ships had overturned, but CCTV and the official Xinhua news agency said Monday that four ships were involved. It was clear if any of the victims were in the other two ships.

The boats overturned after a sudden rain and hail storm hit Wu, a tributary of Yangtze, the longest river in China. In a video shared by the state media, a man could be seen making RCP in another person, while one of the boats moved backwards.

Guizhou’s mountains and rivers are a big tourist raffle, and many Chinese are traveling during the five -day national holidays ending on Monday.

The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, asked “total efforts” to find the disappeared and the care of the injured, Xinhua said Sunday.

The administration of Mr. XIS has pressed to reduce the number of deaths in the Chinese transport sector, but overloaded vehicles, poorly maintained and the lack of security equipment have frustrated those efforts, partly during the important holidays.

CCTV said that two of the dumping boats had about 40 people on board and were not overloaded.

An eyewitness told Beijing News state property that the waters were deep, but some people had managed to swim to a safe place. However, the storm had suddenly arrived and a thick fog obscured the surface of the river.
