Uttarakhand registered the advances registered in two main-Silkyara tunnels for the Char Dham Mahamarg and Janasu project for the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag New Rail Line project that drives a boost to road and rail projects in the state.
The Silkyara tunnel project, a part of which it collapsed in 2023, is crucial to provide connectivity to the Yamunotri Pilgrimage Site in Char Dham, during the year.
On November 12, 2023, the Sub-Construction tunnel between Silkyara and Barkot in Uttarkashi of Uttarakhand collapsed because the rubble fell on the Silkyara side. A total of 41 workers were trapped in the collapse and were safely rescued on November 28.
In a publication on the Social Network Platform X, the Minister of the Union, Nitin Gadkari, said that the transforming tunnel, built at a cost of RS 1,383.78 million rupees, will save an hour of travel time, guarantee the Gangototi-yamunotri seamstress and will provide access to any climate for batteries.
“Today marks a historic milestone with the great advance or the Silkyara tunnel of 4,531 km of Uttarakhand, an engineering wonder under the Chardham Mahamarg project,” he said.
The Prime Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, also acclaimed the achievement, calling him the longest road tunnel in the state.

The second important advance was achieved in the Janasu tunnel, the official called Tunnel number 8, a key part of the Rish Rishikesh-Karanprayag project.
The new railway line covers five districts of Uttarakhand – Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag and Chamoli. It will have 12 new stations, 16 main tunnels, five important and 19 main bridges.
In a statement, the Railroad Ministry said that eight of the 19 main bridges have been completed so far, including one in Chandrabhaga and two on the Alaknanda River.
The Ministry also said that the objective of providing a railway link between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag is to facilitate easy access to the pilgrimage centers of Uttarakhand and connect new commercial centers of the state from the development of backward areas.
Or the total length or approximately 125 km, 83 percent of the line falls into 16 tunnels (104 km).
According to an official statement, with a total length of 14.60 km, the Janasu tunnel will be the longest transport tunnel in India.
Until now, the longest railway tunnel, 12.75 km, was among the Khari stations and Sumber in the Katra-Banihal section of Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The ATAL tunnel, 9 km, is the longest road tunnel between Manali and Leh.
It is for the first time that Indian Railways has successfully used a tunnel drilling machine (TBM) in the Himalayas region. The 10.4 km TBM edge, while the rest was completed using the new Austrian tunnel method (NATM).
The Minister of the Ashwini Vaishnaw Union, in a publication on the social media platform X, shared the update on the advance. “The tunnel hole machine has overcome the longest transport tunnel (T-8) in India, which is 14.58 km long. Rishikesh-Karnapray New Line Project. Uttarakhand,” he said.
