The Bengal Cabinet has approved new rules to appoint the Director General of Police (DGP), sources told CNN-NEWS18. According to these rules, a selection committee headed by a retired judge from the Superior Court will be responsible for appointing the DGP. This change eliminates the need for the state government to send names to the Public Service Commission of the Union (UPSC).

This approach reflects the tasks of the tasks of Uttar Pradesh last year. With these new rules, the interim DGP, Rajeev Kumar, will be appointed permanent DGP for a period of two years, the sources said. Traditionally, the state government would send names of the Most Indian Police Service (IPS) officers senior to the UPSC, which would like three candidates for the list. The state government would then be one of this list.

Rajev Kumar was designated as the interim Bengal DGP in December 2023 after being transferred from its elections after the Duration by the Electoral Commission (CE). After the elections, Mamata Banerjee government restored it as the interim DGP. On Monday, the sandals cabinet approved the new rules, releasing the state government from the obligation to send names to the UPSC.

Selection Committee members

The Selection Committee will be composed of a retired judge, the main secretary, the Secretary of the Interior and other personnel, the sources said. The sources indicate that the idea of these new rules was derived from a verdict of the Supreme Court in a case of police reform of 2006, which was based on a petition presented by former DGP Prakash Singh. The verdict recommended the formation of said committees for the States.

A former bureaucrat mentioned that he had bone groups that the UPSC may not approach the names recruited from the State, but the new rules will empower the state government.

Uttar Pradesh implemented similar rules last year, since they did not have a regular DGP since 2022. Now, Bengala has followed his example.
