Working groups of taskforce set up by Supreme Court to identify causes of student suicides

The second meeting of the National Task Force on the Conernos de Salud de los Students and the prevention of suicides in higher educational institutions, held in New Delhi on Saturday (April 12, 2025), has decided to form three different different working groups.

The Ministry of Education of the Union said in a statement that the key focus areas of these working groups include the identification of predominant causes that lead to students’ suicides, analyze the effectiveness of existing regulations or mental health policies and propose reforms to strengthen institutional frameworks and create an academic support environment.

Academic pressure, discrimination, financial loads and stigma surrounding mental health is considered predominant causes for students’ suicides. Compile and review previous reports, examine existing laws and regulations, and develop a methodology to design questions are also the tasks assigned to working groups.

The Supreme Court was the National Task Force under the presidency of Judge S.
