India’s history, rich and varied, isn’t just in books or monuments. It’s also found in old handwritten documents, like texts, palm leaves, scriptures, old books, and science papers. These have kept India’s wisdom safe for years. On September 12, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started ‘Gyan Bharatam,’ a big digital platform project to digitize, save, and share India’s huge collection of old writings. This isn’t just a tech thing; it’s viewed as a cultural revival, helping India’s old knowledge get out to the world in today’s time.

Why ‘Gyan Bharatam’ Matters
India has a huge collection of manuscripts. The National Mission for Manuscripts thinks there are over 5 million, which might be the biggest collection globally. These manuscripts are in many languages like Sanskrit, Pali, Tamil, and Persian. They also cover various topics, from astronomy and medicine to philosophy and agriculture. Many old documents are deteriorating.Gyan Bharatam is being created in response to this critical situation. It’s a warning that inaction could result in losing a significant part of India’s heritage.

Prime Minister’s Vision
At the launch, Prime Minister Modi noted India’s long-standing strength is rooted in its knowledge. He explained old manuscripts aren’t just relics. They contain useful ideas for today. He also talked about the impact of ancient Indian texts on global thinking. He mentioned how numbers, Ayurveda, and practices for sustainable living have spread worldwide. Modi sees Gyan Bharatam as a way to link India’s old wisdom with today’s tech, hoping to inspire young people with their heritage instead of feeling burdened by it.

India’s manuscript preservation isn’t the only one of its kind. Similar projects exist, like the Dead Sea Scrolls in Israel, Europeana in the EU, and the Dunhuang Project between China and the UK. Gyan Bharatam stands out because of its size and variety. Gyan Bharatam isn’t just about school; it’s a chance to put India’s strengths on display. By showcasing our rich history in science, math, and art, we can boost India’s global image as a hub of knowledge and creativity.

The launch seems to be making people happy. Experts like how simple it is, students think it’s cool, and conservationists believe digitizing is key as long as originals are protected. AI and machine learning offer some real advantages. For example, OCR can help us decipher old documents, translations can happen instantly, and blockchain tech can verify authenticity.

This portal might also show Indian manuscripts that are kept in other countries. It can help close the gaps in our heritage knowledge and make our relationships with other countries stronger. For youth, Gyan Bharatam could transform heritage learning through animations, translations, audio renditions, and VR storytelling. It could spark new research, revive classical languages, and inspire artists. India is at a point where its history meets its tech-driven future. Gyan Bharatam is the country’s attempt to connect these two worlds. By turning old writings into digital versions, it’s both protecting them and bringing them back into modern understanding.
Like one expert in culture said, Each manuscript is like a voice from long ago. Gyan Bharatam is the way these voices can be heard everywhere.
