Pune Expands E-Bus and Metro Projects for a Greener Future

Pune, one of the fastest growing cities in India, is making great changes in public transport. Through Maharashtra’s green vision, the city is adding more electric buses (buses E) and increases its subway system. These steps will help reduce pollution, reduce James’s traffic and facilitate everyone’s change. With new electronic deposits, more additional buses and subway lines, Pune is building a cleaner and greener future for all.

New electric bus deposits to boost public transport

On April 27, 2025, Deputy Minister Vice Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, inaugurated two new electronic deposits in Pune. These deposits, located in Charholi Buduk and Mann, are part of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) initiative to strengthen the city’s public transport system. The deposits will admit 30 e-buses of Chaholi and 30 of Mann, with plans to add more in the future.

The introduction of these deposits reflects the State’s commitment to ecological transport. Ajit Pawar emphasized that the Maharashtra green vision focuses on reducing carbon emissions and promotion of sustainable urban development. By changing electric buses, Pune aims to reduce air pollution caused by vehicles with diesel. The new deposits will also create jobs and improve the reliability of bus services throughout the city.

PMPML does not stop at just two deposits. The organization plans to introduce 1,500 new electronic plates in its fleet in the coming years. These buses serve Serh Pune and neighbor Pimprri-Chinchwad, which cover key routes to reduce the dependence of private vehicles. This movement is expected to make public transport more accessible and affordable for residents.

Expanding Pune Metro Network

Together with the fair electronic, Pune is rapidly expanding its metro railway network to address the city’s growing traffic problems. The Pune Metro, administered by the Development Authority of the Metropolitan Region of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MAHAMETRO) and the Development Authority of the Metropolitan Region of Pune (PMRDA), currently operates two lines: the purple line (PCMC to Swargate) and the Aqua line). As of November 2024, these lines cover 33 kilometers and serve millions of travelers.

The state government recently approved several new metropolitan routes to further improve connectivity. In October 2024, two key extensions were Greenlit:

  • Nal stop to Warje-Manikbaug: An elevated line of 6.1 kilometers to serve the residents of Sinhagad Road.
  • Khadakwasla to Kharadi through Swargate and Hadapsar: An elevated line of 25.5 kilometers to connect the outskirts of the city.

These routes are part of Phase 2 of Pune Metro, which covers 31.64 kilometers and it is estimated that it costs RS. 9,897.19 million rupees. The Government has assigned RS. 1 crore to prepare detailed reports of the project (DPRS) for these extensions. The construction is expected to begin in 2026, with the completion directed by 2031.

Other proposal routes include:

  • VANAZ TO CHANDNI CHOWK (1.12 kilometers)
  • Ramwadi to Wagholi (11.63 kilometers)
  • PCMC to Nigdi (4.4 kilometers)
  • Swargate to Katraj (5 kilometers)

These extensions will bring subway services to crowded areas such as Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Hadapsar, where traffic congestion is a daily challenge. The Hinjewadi line to Shivajinagar, a 23 -kilometer route, will open in September 2025. This line will provide direct access to the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, an important employment center.

Maharashtra’s green vision

The Maharashtra green vision is in the heart of Pune’s transport updates. This initiative, defended by the state government, aims to make Maharashtra cities more sustainable and habitable. By investing in electric buses and metro systems, Pune is reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and addressing air pollution. The vision also includes plans for better roads, such as Pune Ring Road and the next Internal Ring Road, to relieve traffic flow.

State and central governments are working together to finance thesis projects. For example, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of the Union is covering 50% of the DPRS preparation cost for subway extensions. The European Investment Bank has also provided a loan of € 150 million to support the construction of the Pune Metro. These associations ensure that the city has resources to achieve its green goals.

Benefits for Pune residents

The expansion of electronic buses and metropolitan lines will bring several benefits to Pune residents:

  • Reduced contamination: Electric buses produce zero exhaust tube emissions, improving air quality in a city where pollution levels are a growing concern.
  • Less traffic: With more people who use public transport, Feer’s private vehicles will obstruct roads, reducing travel time.
  • Affordable trip: Metro and bus rates are lower than the fuel cost for cars or bicycles, which makes public transport an economic option.
  • Better connectivity: The new subway routes and bus services will connect distant neighborhoods with the city center, which facilitates the trip to work or school.

For example, new electronic routes will serve areas such as Baner, Balewadi and Kothrud, where the demand for public transport is high. Metro extensions will also benefit students, professionals and daily salary workers who depend on affordable transport options.

Challenges and solutions

While the projects are promising, they face some challenges. The Hinjewadi metropolitan line to Shivajinagar, originally that it will open in March 2025, was delayed due to restrictions related to elections and land acquisition problems. To address this, the PMRDA has requested an extension until September 2025 and is accelerating the construction.

Another challenge is to integrate electronic buses and subway systems with last mile connectivity. Many travelers need affordable options to travel from subway stations or bus stops to their final destinations. To resolve this, Mahameter introduces Rickshaws of electronic car in selected metro stations. These electric rickshaws, inspired by similar services in Delhi, will provide a cheap and ecological form of covering short distances. Currently, Pune has only 170 rickshaws of registered passengers, but Mahamotro plans to increase this number.

Public acceptance is also crucial. In the past, E-Rickshaws faced the resistance of traditional automotive drivers, which limited their popularity. To overcome this, PMPML and MAHAMETER are involved with local communities and create awareness about the benefits of electric vehicles.

An integral mobility plan for Pune

In January 2025, the principal vice minister Ajit Pawar announced a 30 -year integral mobility plan (CMP) for the Pune district. This ambitious plan, which costs RS. 1,26,489 million rupees, aims to transform the region’s transport system. The key features include:

  • 276 kilometers or new subway routesIncluding a massive capacity of high capacity (HCMTR).
  • 6,000 new busesWith an approach to electrical models.
  • 641 kilometers or new bus routes To improve connectivity in 20,000 square kilometers.
  • Six New Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes To guarantee faster bus services.

The CMP will be implemented in three phases, with the aim of satisfying the transport needs of the growing population of Pune. By 2050, the city expects to have a fully integrated public transport system that reduces the dependence of private vehicles and promotes sustainability.

Community and government support

Local leaders and residents have welcomed transport improvements. Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis has promised to review the progress of subway projects regularly to guarantee timely completion. Citizen groups, such as Save Pune Traffic Movement, support the introduction of EEEE-Buses EEEEEE-THEN emphasize the need for better mile connectivity.

Non -governmental organizations (NGOs) have also played a role in the configuration of Pune transport policies. For example, the Institute of Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) has worked with PMPML to improve bus services over the years. His efforts have helped make Pune’s public transport system more efficient and easy to use.

Looking to the future

E-Bus and Metro de Pune expansions are a significant step towards a greener and more connected city. By 2031, the Metro network is expected to cover more than 80 kilometers, with phase 2 routes in complete operation. The addition of 1,500 e-Buses and new deposits will further strengthen PMPML services, which makes public transport the preferred option for travelers.

These projects are aligned with the broader objectives of India to reduce carbon emissions and sustainable urban development of the promotion. As Pune grows, Maharashtra’s green vision will ensure that the city remains a leader in ecological transport. Residents can expect cleaner air, softer trips and a higher quality of life in the coming years.
