Chennai: The South Korean electronics giant, Samsung, on Thursday urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure worker safety, uphold discipline, and facilitate business dealings as the CITU-affiliated Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU) escalated its protest.
The DMK administration’s handling of the crisis at Samsung India’s factory in Sunguvarchatram, close to Chennai, where SIWU members have been demonstrating against the suspension of three of their coworkers for the past two weeks, is damningly indicted in the company’s appeal.
Since the workers’ protest over the SIWU’s recognition on September 9 of last year, which lasted until October 14, the factory has been plagued by issues.
After the state government stepped in and brought Samsung India and the protesting workers together, the CITU’s demonstration was called off. The pause, however, was short-lived as workers claimed they were being victimized for spearheading the demonstrations, and three were suspended for breaking company rules.
Samsung India informed DH that some employees attempted to illegally disrupt operations and industrial peace on Thursday once more and that the business has a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal worker activity that disturbs workplace peace and industrial stability.
“While our production remains uninterrupted, we urge the state authorities to secure the safety of our workers, maintain discipline and provide ease of doing business,” a company representative said in a statement.
The DMK regime is being criticized for failing to act quickly enough to end the crisis. The development occurs at a time when the Tamil Nadu government is optimistic about luring investments into the electronics industry because the state continues to welcome an increasing number of suppliers from Apple Inc.
