Two men have been convicted of cutting the beloved Sycamore Gapas tree in Great Britain in 2023, in what prosecutors called a “silly mission” that shocked the nation.
Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carrosers, 32, denied cutting the tree, but both were sentenced on Friday for charges of criminal damage.
The tree, a famous historic who was with Hadrian’s wall, a Unesco World Heritage site in northern England, was found illegally cut in September 2023.
Prosecutor Richard Wright told the Crown of Newcastle the crown duration that the two friends led to the site from the nearby city of Carlisle and committed the “act of deliberate and meaningless criminal damage” together, filming the felling on a cell phone.
The prosecutor said that Graham maintained a wedge of the tree trunk as a trophy, and that the messages between him and Mr. Carruthers showed them “delight” in the coverage of the international media after the tree was found. They will be sentenced at a later date.
