The top scientists in the UK and India will create “game-changing ideas” through a new seed fund.

Imperial established the India Connect Fund, which will provide funding for collaborative research projects involving Imperial and Indian scientists.

Imperial, ranked among the top ten universities in the world and the top university in the UK for research impact, anticipates that these projects will spark novel concepts and significant advances in science.

The Fund focuses on initiatives that will address common global concerns by bringing together scholars from India & the UK in the fields of sustainability, health, and climate change.

In a statement, Professor Ian Walmsley, Rector of Imperial, who will present the Fund at events in Bengaluru and New Delhi, stated that India is a crucial ally for UK scientists and an immensely stimulating environment for research and innovation.

Over the past five years, Imperial’s academics have collaborated on over 1500 research publications with colleagues from nearly 400 Indian universities as well as study centers.

“Our new India Connection Fund aims to build these kinds of strong ties by providing even greater opportunities for India’s top scientists to collaborate closely with Imperial colleagues on cutting edge health, climate, and sustainability research.”

The initial financing will facilitate the creation of prototypes, workshops, hackathons, and exploratory research as well as small-scale experiments. The successful researchers and students will be able to study and work abroad at Imperial and associate institutes in India. A primary investigator stationed at the Indian partner institution and one lead investigator based at Imperial will oversee each project.

Sixth in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings and eighth in the Times Higher Learning World University Rankings for 2024, Imperial College London is ranked among the world’s top 10 universities.

With the Indian Institute of Sciences Bangalore, India, the All India Institute of Medicine, Indian the Institute of Technology Bombay, India Indian Institute of Technologies Delhi, Indian the Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and the Tata Institutes of Fundamental Research as current research partners, India has been one of Imperial’s closest global collaborators for many years.

In a variety of common challenge areas, Imperial scientists collaborate with partners in academia, business, and government to develop next-generation technologies for clean energy, co-produce antimicrobial pollution policies, and train the next generation of infectious illness modelers.
