To mitigate floods and reduce the intrusion of seawater, the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Conservation Corporation and Restoration of Riveras plans to relive the bodies of water near the coast in 15 districts. As a pilot initiative, he plans to study the rejuvenating water bodies between Besant Nagar in Chennai and Kovalam in the Chengalpattu district for a better groundwater recharge.

The Corporation, which works under the Department of Water Resources (WRD), was formed to promote water conservation, climate resistant infrastructure and modernize irrigation infrastructure. With the aim of formulating a program to prevent seawater intrusion and improve groundwater recharge, the corporation has proposed to restore bodies of water within 15 km inside the coast in 15 districts. The sources said that the bodies of water would be rejuvenated to store excess flood water and increase groundwater recharge. The viability of diverting the flood water runoff through the tanks supply channels would also be studied.

To begin with, the Corporation has presented a proposal to carry out a pilot project of ₹ 6.51-CRORE to the Ministry of Water Resources of the Union to study and rejuvenate the water supply between the Besant Nagar and Kovalam. The proposal has been sent through the Central Board of Groundwater. These water supplies have chosen bones in locations where the intrusion of seawater is predominant, which affects the groundwater aquifer.

Fourteen tanks, which are found in flood -prone areas, are identified in the bone in the Padapai and Thiruporur blocks to be disappointed and disilmed to recharge groundwater and dilute salinity. The bodies of water in Semmoncheri, Ottiyambakkam, Medakkkam, Sithalapakkam, Polacheri and Amoor have been chosen for the study.

It was discovered that the groundwater level in the pilot study area decreased to 3.90 m below the summer of doors at ground level. According to the data of the WRD Water and Surface Water Resources Data Center, the total of dissolved solids, an indicative parameter of water quality, was on the permissible limit in areas such as Neelankarai, Palavakam, Kovalam and real parts or parts. Citing indiscriminate extraction from groundwater due to urbanization and water stress as project reasons, the corporation said that building artificial recharge structures and improving the storage capacity of tanks would increase the quality and judgment of groundwater in coastal Beltression.

G. SATHISH DE SEMEMERI, said: “We trust in the metropolitan water supply or private suppliers for our daily needs. The areas of proximity to the coast and the excessive extraction of groundwater has led to an increase in politics. Forting government agencies, Yyyyy of the administration, Yyyyy -—Tet –T-

The corporation would use satellite information techniques and the geographic information system and analysis of the incursion of water and seawater through a simulation model, will choose sites for groundwater observation wells and identify the bodies of water.

After completing the pilot project, the scheme would be expanded to other coastal districts, the sources said.
